FTs Doom St. John's Against Cincinnati

Jan 23, 2011 4:32 PM

St. John's needed a win against Cincinnati to get back near the top of the Big East, but they were foiled at the free throw line.

They lost 53-51 to the Bearcats after going 14-of-26 from the foul line, including the front end of a 1-and-1 with 23.9 seconds left.

"I'm a 90-percent free throw shooter and I should have made the shot," said Dwight Hardy, who missed the 1-and-1. "Unfortunately I missed it short. Next time I'll have to get more legs into it."

St. John's Upsets No. 11 Notre Dame

Jan 16, 2011 6:40 PM

St. John's used an 11-point edge in the second half to knock off No. 11 Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Storm won 72-54 at Madison Square Garden.

"My statement is St. John's defended the heck out us," Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said. "We had trouble with their fullcourt pressure, with their halfcourt stuff. We could never get in any rhythm."

St. John's, which trailed 45-22 at halftime last Saturday against Notre Dame, led this game 26-19 at halftime, holding the Irish to a school-record low four field goals in the opening 20 minutes of a Big East game.

Notre Dame Ends St. John's Winning Streak

Jan 9, 2011 11:44 AM

No. 14 Notre Dame defeated St. John's 76-61 on Saturday to end the team's five-game winning streak.

It was also the first Big East loss for the Red Storm.

"He sets a great tone for us because of his strong personality of defending and he truly takes pride in that," Irish coach Mike Brey said of Ben Hansbrough. "He's not only typically playing the whole game for us, but he's scoring and going for the jugular on teams to put them away. And then he uses a lot of energy to lead and set the tone and get us focused.

"I don't think you can't ignore what he's been doing."

Hansbrough has 26 points in Notre Dame's victory.

St. John's Upsets No. 13 Georgetown On Brownlee's Basket

Jan 4, 2011 9:15 AM

St. John's defeated No. 13 Georgetown 61-58 on Monday night, becoming the first team to reach 3-0 in Big East play this season.

The win was the fifth straight for the Red Storm and it ended their streak of 14 straight losses to ranked teams.

Justin Brownlee's rebound and putback gave St. John's the lead for good with 10 seconds left.

"This is what I came to St. John's for," he said. "When you get a rebound like that, a big play, it makes you feel like you were right. Any win over a ranked team is great but we know we still have work to do."

It was Georgetown's second-lowest point total of the season.
